A midwestern school district discovered their cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the worst way: being forced to pay thousands of dollars in ransom to retrieve stolen files from hackers. It was clear their cybersecurity strategy was lacking and left their data exposed. After an internal review, they discovered their physical security was in jeopardy as well. The district operated on a mismatched security network with each building having a different system in place. In addition, both intrusion detection systems and access control systems were out of date and not functioning effectively. The district needed to address their vulnerabilities through a standardized security system for the health of their buildings and data as well as the safety of students and staff.

Securing funding for district-wide updates

By utilizing Johnson Controls grant services department, the school district was able to secure funding through a grant to cover all new security expenses. With the project 100 percent funded and cost-free, Johnson Controls quickly went to work, outfitting the entire district with a standardized security system. Throughout the buildings, Johnson Controls efficiently installed exacqVision, Kantech, intrusion detection systems, upgraded IT and PA systems and the state’s very first active shooter detection system.

A standardized and secure school district

Through Johnson Controls updates, the district’s security infrastructure is now standardized and in sync. Every building’s security system is able to communicate with the others, providing the administration with complete transparency into the day-to-day activities of the district. The active shooter detection system strengthens the district’s safety by allowing every building to enact an effective, potentially life-saving response in the event of a gun violence emergency. As a result, each school in the district is now a safer environment for students, staff and visitors.

In addition to greater physical security, the district’s cybersecurity was enhanced as well. The new security systems automatically included the protection of Johnson Controls ISASecure® Secure Development Lifecycle Assurance Certification. And by leveraging Johnson Controls grant services, the district was able to make all upgrades for free, allowing them to keep resources focused on their mission of education.
